Wedding insurance is the best way to protect yourself from financial loss in the event of a wedding mishap – including property damage due to guests getting too rowdy, cancellations due to severe weather, or vendor problems.
Liability insurance is most typically now required by wedding venues. It protects their property from any damages that may occur during your wedding. It can also protect you if a guest gets injured on the dance floor due to a spilled drink or broken glass.
Cancellation insurance hit its prime time during 2020 – obviously. It will typically cover unexpected illness (hello COVID!) for the bridal couple (only!). Uncontrollable forest fire in the city where you’re hosting your wedding? Cancellation insurance should cover you. Military leave and other serious issues should also be covered. This coverage should also protect you from businesses that go out of business prior to your wedding and cant fulfill their obligations.
I am saying “should” a lot because each insurance is different in what they do and do not cover. Do your research on what company to go with and make sure your concerns are covered.
The price of insurance will vary on many factors – location, date, guest count, alcohol, etc. Having a fireworks display? Cost will go up. Having an extravagant wedding upwards of $100k? You will want to be fully covered so your price will be higher than a wedding that costs $40k.
For a wedding in Houston, TX in the fall of 2022 with 150 guests and alcohol being served, you can expect to spend about $150-300 each on liability insurance and cancellation insurance. Not a bad price to cover yourself!
PRO TIP: Make sure every vendor you book is also insured!
Wedding insurance we recommend: Wedsure and Wedsafe
